You know in soap operas there is no such thing as a straight forward wedding? Either someone dies, or the bride runs away, or someone actually does know of a reason why these two people shouldn’t be joined in holy matrimony etc. Basically the kind of thing that doesn’t happen in real life
Well today….. …it still didn’t.
We went to a wedding today which was a Greek Orthodox wedding with an English groom, a Cypriot bride and a Russian priest. No, it’s not a joke, this actually happened.
The ceremony was quite an experience. The Russian priest seemed to repeat things a lot, only ever spoke in song & wouldn’t do it unless accompanied by a humming woman in black who gave me the impression of being his mother. There was lots of kissing bibles & walking in a circle around the communion table and such like. At the end the whole congregation queued up to shake hands with the bride, kiss the groom (or vice versa) and then be armed with coloured rice to pelt the couple with as they left.
The reception was a much more traditional affair, great food, great wine etc. We were seated on table 2 with the bride’s siblings & cousins who were really nice and could mostly speak English. There were a few comical moments where we had to explain to them what a Yorkshire pudding was, and what the English best man meant in his speech by “Shat himself…”.
At one point I was in a conversation with a Cypriot guy and an Indian guy. The Cypriot spoke of how the Turks are causing chaos in Cyprus, turfing the Cypriots out of their family homes onto the streets and keeping the houses for themselves. The Indian commented that it’s much the same in Mumbai with the Muslims. I kept my mouth shut but thought to myself “Yes, our area is pretty bad too. The neighbourhood kids often buzz our flat then run away”…
We live in a very different world.
Earlier in the day I actually pulled my finger out and began editing a wedding I videod back in September. To be fair I had been waiting for the audio recording from the church until January.
Quite an eventful day all in all!
